Abertillery will take centre stage this March as businesses, residents and the Council unite for a special one-week town boost, a practical initiative focused on showing what can be achieved when people work together to improve their town centre.
Running from Tuesday 10 March to Saturday 14 March, the programme, led by Creative Communities International through support from Welsh Government and the Design Commission for Wales, will bring the community together initially for a series of hands-on events at The Met, Abertillery followed by a one-day practical workshop to makeover Somerset Street, Abertillery. The initiative focuses on practical action to create immediate impact.
As part of the 天美传媒 Deal, a new way of working with communities, the Council is listening to and working with local people on what鈥檚 important to them.
Councillor John Morgan said, Cabinet Member for Economy & Place, said:
鈥淲e鈥檙e committed to creating vibrant, well-connected communities where people and businesses can thrive. At our recent Citizens Assembly, lots of you told us you wanted to see improvements to our town centres, and we spoke about how residents, businesses and local organisations can come together to make this happen and the one-week boost is a great example of this 鈥 I鈥檇 encourage anyone in the area to get involved.鈥
The week includes an information evening, planning sessions, business workshops aimed at reducing barriers and increasing footfall, and will culminate in a One-Day Makeover on Saturday 14 March.
Events are open to local businesses, residents, community groups and volunteers. No experience is required, just a willingness to get involved. Attendance is free, but registration is essential.
The One-Week Town Boost aims to demonstrate how collective community action can help shape a more vibrant, welcoming and prosperous town centre for Abertillery.
The week will culminate in a One-Day Makeover on Saturday 14 March, from 8am to 5pm, when a key space on Somerset Street will be transformed. The makeover will demonstrate what is possible with collaboration, creativity and a modest budget, offering a tangible vision for the future of the town centre. The budget for the one-day makeover is being made available through the UK Government鈥檚 Shared Prosperity Fund.
Organisers describe the day as both practical and fun, bringing together volunteers, businesses and community groups to deliver visible change in a single day.
