Coed-y-Garn Primary School, Blaina, has proudly become the first school in Gwent, and we believe in Wales, to adapt, introduce and complete the UK Honours Primary School Programme, with the support of Brigadier Robert Aitken CBE, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Gwent. This pioneering initiative marks a significant milestone in educational enrichment and civic engagement for young learners in the region.
During the programme, pupils explored the history and significance of the Honours System, learning what an Honour is, why individuals are recognised, and the various types of Honours awarded in the United Kingdom. The children also researched notable Welsh recipients of Honours from HM Queen Elizabeth II and HM King Charles III.
A unique aspect of the programme encouraged pupils to reflect on their own aspirations and consider the extraordinary contributions they might make in the future鈥攃ontributions worthy of an Honour nomination. Each child designed a personal Medal of Honour, linked to their envisioned achievements, and brought their designs to life using the school鈥檚 3D printer.
The culmination of the programme was an inspiring investiture ceremony, where children from Dosbarth Aur presented their learning to family members and the wider school community. Brigadier Robert Aitken CBE, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Gwent attended as the esteemed guest and presented the awards to those pupils who completed all four modules of the School Honours Programme. The ceremony featured AI-generated images of the children鈥檚 future selves, adding a creative and forward-looking dimension to the event.
Special thanks were extended to all attendees, including parents, carers, family members, Rev. Roy Watson BEM (Chair of Governors), Mrs Susan Gwyer-Roberts, the Deputy Lieutenant who is leading on this initiative for the Lieutenancy in Gwent, and the dedicated staff and pupils of Coed-y-Garn.

Reflecting on the programme, Mrs Holder, Dosbarth Aur class teacher, commented:
